The following is a post from Mike Brundgardt, the founder of ProHoopStrength.com and the former Strength and Conditioning Coach for the San Antonio Spurs, who is at the PIT this week.

Since 2010, the PIT has started it’s week by utilizing BAM testing (Basic Athletic Measurement) to measure the athleticism of the players participating in the tournament. This was an important addition to the event. The NBA started incorporating BAM testing at it’s Chicago Pre Draft Camp the year before in 2009. This information has become increasingly important to GMs around the league as they evaluate players for the draft. The fundamental components of athleticism for a basketball player revolve around strength, power, explosion, agility, reaction and speed. These elements are measured utilizing the following tests:

Power and Explosion are determined by administering:

1) No Step Vertical Jump

2) Approach Vertical Jump

Agility and Reaction is measured by:

1) 4 Way Lane Agility Test

2) Reaction Shuttle

Speed is assessed in the Baseline To Free Throw Line (3/4 Court) Sprint.  Strength is measured in all of these tests because it is a component of power, explosion, agility, and speed. Increases in these areas will be preceded by an increase in strength. This is an example comparison of BAM scores for some NBA point guards:

In basketball power and explosion determine your jumping ability, which translates in the ability to rebound, block shots, and dunk. Agility will determine a player’s ability to move and change direction in multiple directions which has important applications on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Speed allows a player to blow by another player, whether in a fast break, penetration in the lane, or staying with someone defensively. Today we will be starting the testing and seeing who the top performers in each of these tests. Stay tuned for more from Mike talks screening athletes to determine areas they need to improve to enhance their chances for success and help prevent injury.
